Professional Experience
Prior to joining the admissions team, Karl taught high school Spanish in Memphis, Tennessee, through Teach for America. He also volunteered with Young Life throughout college and while teaching in Memphis. For the last six years Karl has been a graduate student at a large research university. In this capacity he taught and mentored undergraduate students, modeling his teaching after the examples set by his Hope professors. As a current graduate student and Â鶹ÊÓƵ alumnus, Karl has a unique perspective on differences in student life at big and small, public and private institutions.
Why I Love Hope
Karl grew up in Holland, so he has always been a Â鶹ÊÓƵ fan. He cheered for Hope sports as a little kid and still loves to attend any Hope sporting event. But his love for Hope really grew when he realized how his experiences in college were opening up the world to him. The professors at Hope learned his name as a student and have since become his close friends and advisers. The academic foundation he began at Hope ensured his success in graduate studies, even helping to land him a full fellowship for his master’s degree.
Outside the College
Karl enjoys running and swimming, though most of his time is spent cheering on his kids, Henry (10) and Alyce (7), as they compete in soccer and gymnastics. Karl and his wife Tracey (’03 Hope graduate) love to travel and both lived abroad during and after their time at Hope. Once graduate school is finished they are excited to share the world with their kids. They also Geocache, listen to records (especially the Beatles), play board games and read.
