Tips from Faculty
PSY 100 and Statistics (MATH 115/215/219) are foundational courses, so take them early. Then, we recommend Research Methods (PSY 201) and Developmental Psychology (PSY 230).
After Developmental Psychology, we recommend survey courses in this order:
- Intro to Neuroscience (NSCI/PSY 211 & 212)
- Behavior Disorders (PSY 310)
- Health Psychology (PSY 325)
- Social Psychology (PSY 330)
- Cognitive Psychology (PSY 340)
“Majoring in psychology and immersing myself in the psychology department at Hope was one of the most important decisions I made throughout my four years in college. Not only does the department offer a variety of interesting classes and opportunities for research, but the professors are also very dedicated to getting to know their students and supporting them, both academically and personally. My advice to incoming students is to take classes beyond what is required by the major. Getting involved in research is also a great opportunity. Research is a fun way to learn more about a particular area of psychology, better get to know professors and other students, and learn a lot of transferrable skills that will be useful for jobs or in graduate school. When I was entering college as a freshman, I couldn’t have imagined how many great opportunities would be offered to me or how much I would enjoy studying psychology at Hope. I will forever be grateful for the way this department prepared me to move forward.”
