Alignment of Student Learning Outcomes

At Hope College, courses in academic disciplines have an identified set of student learning outcomes. These are the measurable skills, knowledge, and behaviors students have upon completion of the course.  Individual course outcomes map to the program’s student learning outcomes, which are the set of skills, knowledge, and behaviors  a student will have when they complete the requirements of their academic program of study.

In addition to their academic program courses, students complete general education courses. Beginning in fall 2023, the seven Anchor Plan student learning outcomes replace our previous general education outcomes.

Hope students also engage in cocurricular activities that enhance their courses and provide learning experiences. For example, outside of class assistance provided in a library consultation, career services provided by the Boerigter Center for Calling and Career, and mentored leadership in multicultural student organizations. These and other cocurricular activities have student learning outcomes.

While achieving learning goals through their program courses, general education courses (the Anchor Plan) and cocurricular experiences, Hope students also achieve the five common learning outcomes: the overarching skills and knowledge students will have when they complete their Â鶹ÊÓƵ degree.

Finally, the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Mission guides all programming and outcomes.

The mission of Â鶹ÊÓƵ is to educate students for lives of leadership and service in a global society through academic and cocurricular programs of recognized excellence in the liberal arts and in the context of the historic Christian faith.

This is the overarching goal of a Â鶹ÊÓƵ education and all course, program, cocurricular, and general education outcomes support student success in reaching this goal.
